Last night was a night to remember. I cried during the roll call. I cried during Bernie Sanders nomination. I cried during the speeches. I can now foresee a day when Hillary Clinton is the President of the United States. I knew, I KNEW I had to blog about this, and make something in her honor. So I did a riff on a drink I used to get a now defunct bar in Brooklyn, that featured two of the future President’s favorite drinks–vodka and wine. I deemed it the Madam Presidentini and had two while watching Former President Clinton’s and Madeleine Albright’s speeches. I should say that I drank the Madam Presidentini while choking back tears. Because that was my night.
This election cycle has been terribly rough. I am a diehard Hillary supporter and have been since day one. I watched as many speeches as I could, participated in phone banks, donated, shouted from the rafters about my confidence in her candidacy.
But that wasn’t always easy. While I’m not friends with many Trump supporters, (essentially zero, thank G-d.) I am friends with several Bernie Supporters. And I was repeatedly told that I was voting for a demagogue–a tyrant–the establishment princess–and worst–a criminal.
I fought back. I wasn’t quiet. I didn’t sit on the sidelines waiting for time to pass. For every accusation I have facts, quotes, reality to come back with the problems with their assertions. I will continually argue that voting Trump or voting 3rd party is a privileged position that will seriously and negatively affect the lives of millions of Americans. I will also argue that voting for Hillary Clinton isn’t voting for the “lesser of two evils,” as many are contending, but instead a vote for a woman who has tirelessly worked for children, families, minorities, education, healthcare, the security of our nation, and the future for all American citizens.
She is a game changer. She is the most-qualified. She is an American Hero.
She’s also a hell of an author. And since my blog is Reader/Eater, I thought I’d showcase some of her work, and some works that I feel fall perfectly in-line with the ideals of our future President. (I am not featuring any of my other American Hero, Madeleine Albright, because I’ve done that.)
This book is an amazing account of Secretary Clinton’s four years as SoS. It’s gripping, sad, inspiring, and wonderfully eloquent.
Some Alternative Selections:
She’s always been meticulously scrutinized. Perfection has been demanded. This book takes a look at that scrutiny, and examines why it is that it exists.
An ABC book of intersectional feminism. Who doesn’t need one of those, amirite?
And just so you remember what is also at stake in this election:
The next president will be CHOOSING THE NEXT SCOTUS JUSTICE. Because the do-nothing republicans are blocking Obama’s nomination. This is incredibly important.
The Madam Presidentini.
